The Founding Fathers of the Delta Tetarton Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa

In February of 1991, the University of Florida chapter of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity was closed by the university due to problems related to hazing.  The chapter left behind 22 uninitiated new members who were approximately six weeks into their new member program.  The closure left these young men with nothing, and of these, only two went to join other Greek organizations in the following fall.

Even though their fraternity was no more, the bond these young men shared was still strong.  There were fourteen men out of the original group that wished to remain together in a fraternity, but the chances of another house taking them as a group were very slim.

On September 14, 1991, Gregory Lee sought out the possibility of starting a new fraternity by calling the national headquarters of various fraternities.  Brother Greg's father was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and an attempt to contact that particular fraternity was made.  Quite by accident, an operator connected Brother Greg with Phi Sigma Kappa instead. Brother Lou Reddenbaugh spoke with Brother Lee for approximately 20 minutes before either of the men realized that Brother Greg had reached the wrong group.  This was the "mistaken call" that led to Phi Sigma Kappa's rebirth at the University of Florida.

Phi Sigma Kappa had in fact existed on the University of Florida campus some 30 years earlier in the late 1950's and early 60's.  Coincidentally, the Grand Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa had been eagerly awaiting the chance to move back on the campus for quite some time.  Brother Lou sent the interest group information and an invitation to petition to become a Colony (an official affiliation with a national organization).  After much consideration, the group of 14 men decided that Phi Sigma Kappa would be their fraternity.

The Colony Petition required the group to have 25 men to become officially affiliated with Phi Sigma Kappa.  By the beginning of November, they had met the requirement and on November 11, 1991, became the Delta Tetarton Colony of Phi Sigma Kappa. On this date, the Fraternity was also admitted to official affiliation with the university and joined the Interfraternity Council.

Over the next one and a half years, the colony faced many challenges and proved itself worthy to become a full-fledged chapter.  On April 3, 1993, the Delta Tetarton Colony became the Delta Tetarton Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa International Fraternity.

Since then Phi Sig has become one of the most successful fraternities on UF's campus.  Phi Sig has won several awards, including the national Phi Sig chapter of the year!  Phi Sig has also won the President's Cup for coming in first place in intramural sports at UF several times.
